A square radio. A story is playing on the radio. Do you want to hear this story?

Ask the children to pay attention to what the characters in the story like while listening. Click on the radio and listen to the story.

02Listen to the story “Square Face and Round Face”

There lived a family at the foot of the mountain. There was an old father-in-law and an old woman. My husband is tall, thin, and has a square face. The old woman is short, quite fat, and has a round face. My square-faced husband likes square things. When he sits, he has to use a square stool; when he drinks, he has to use a square cup; even when he walks, he has to take square steps. Round-faced old ladies like round things. She often eats at a round table; when combing her hair, she looks in a round mirror; when she sleeps, she does not use a pillow, but rests on a big pumpkin.

One day, the old couple had a quarrel and wanted to separate. The old man said: “The square things are mine!” The old woman said: “The round things are mine!” “Okay, that’s it, let’s divide it!” The old man stood in the small yard and took a look and said, “The house is square. , belong to me!” The old woman said: “The rafters are round, I have to remove the roof!” The old man pointed to the table and chairs and said: “The tables and chairs are square, belong to me!” The old woman said: “The nails are round, I have to remove them! All the nails have to be taken off.”

The old couple had been separated all morning, and the more they separated, the more unclear they became. Look, the quilt is square, and the flowers embroidered on the quilt are round. The kitchen knife is square and the handle is round. The gown is square and the sleeves are round. The old couple looked at each other again and found that the old man’s face was square and his eyes were round. The old woman’s face is round and her two front teeth are square. “Haha…” The old man laughed. “Puch…” The old woman was happy. Both the father-in-law and the old woman said: “No, no, no!”

Now, the old father-in-law and the old woman still live together, and they are getting happier and happier.

03 Review the story and learn about squares and circles.

★What do the old man and the old woman like?

The old man likes square things, and the old woman likes round things.

★Do children know what a square and a circle are?

A square is composed of four straight lines and four corners, while a circle has curved sides and no corners.

★What are the square things in their home?

There are square stools and square cups.

★What about round ones?

There are round tables, round mirrors, and pumpkins.

★What happened to the old father-in-law and the old woman?

One day, the old couple had a quarrel and wanted to separate.

★Can you tell the difference clearly? Why?

It’s hard to tell because the house is square but the rafters are round; the tables and stools are square but the nails are round; the quilt is square but the rusty flowers on the quilt are round…

★What happened in the end?

They found it difficult to tell the difference because square objects had circles inside them, and round objects had squares inside them. So they reconciled again and they are still living happily together.

04Hands-on activities

Now let’s play a game. Ask the children to help the square-faced father-in-law and round-faced mother-in-law find the items they like and put them in the boxes next to them. Every time you find something, tell me what kind of object it is, whether it is square or round.

(The children sitting around the Medo Interactive Desk naturally form a group) Finally, count how many square items and how many round items your group found. See which group can find it quickly and accurately.

  • Summarization –

The father-in-law with a square face and the mother-in-law with a round face have so many square and round objects at home. Do the children have square objects at home? What items are square? Are there any round ones? What items are round?

In addition to squares and circles, can children find other shapes in our classroom?
